Thinking of Taking Your Offline Business Online – Part 1

by blunty58 on May 30, 2009

In theory any business can benefit from taking their enterprise online. Many businesses today both small and large are harnessing the power of the internet, taking advantage of the opportunities that a website can bring to ones business. However, there are quite a few things to consider before making the decision to move forward and become an online entity.

First of all you need to identify exactly what the reason is for taking your business online. The reasons for building a web site can range from generating sales to providing simple information about your company to your current or prospective clients and customers. So the first thing that needs to be established is the reason for building a website or online presence.

Is it to branch out and increase your businesses customer base?

Or do you just want to provide your current customers with a better service by having a professional website up and running with all the information they need and want at the click of a button?

If you are looking at increasing your customer base and doing more sales from having that online presence then there are some questions that need to be addressed.

Can your business handle an increase in sales?

First of all a well orchestrated market research project needs to be run to evaluate the net effect that a website will have on your business. That is how competitive the your particular niche is online, both locally and abroad. Remember the great thing about the internet is that ones marketplace can be worldwide.

Ok so are there systems in place to be able to cope with the predicted levels of growth?

Do you have the staff necessary to fill orders and ensure your customer service is up to par?

These are importnat question to ask as an unorganized system will quickly collapse in the online environment. Remember, word of mouth spreads way faster online than it does offline. Although jumping into this bigger market could be very profitable, the reasons mentioned above make the task of actually doing this very daunting, especially for a small business owner.

If this is the case then maybe the goal of selling online shouldn’t be your goal. Instead, you could strive to provide better information to your existing customer base such as store hours, maps, upcoming events and generally provide better value with information on specials or maybe even get the customers signing up for an electronic newsletter. This will allow you to explain the benefits of your products and or services to a wider audience. This will help build your company’s reputation and give you better insight into how to adapt and improve your service and or product to better meet the needs of your customer base and in turn increase your businesses profitability.
