Alex Jeffreys had a great idea to get everyone to kick start their online businesses by creating a competition to get people to take more action and get more traffic to their blogs. Ok so what did he do?

Well there is a thousand dollar prize up for grabs which one of his students will win. Basically who-ever generates the most traffic wins on condition that they share the techniques they are using to generate the traffic to their blog.

One thing I have been taught is "oil rig hopping."  Now this just means going around to all of the blogs relevant to your own and posting comments, sharing ideas and giving feedback on a particular subject. Basically you are creating value by helping someone else or sharing an idea or thought so that other readers or even the blog owner can benefit from. You can also do this at various forums related to your niche. 

Another great method of generating traffic and two way backlinks to your site is by using Blog Carnival. It’s free and an extremely effective  method of generating targeted traffic. Matt gives a very good explanation of how you can use blog carnival to get those backlinks to your blog which will give your site a better search engine ranking as well as give you some traffic.
